Frightening but True - A Tale of Caution
Frightening But True - A Tale of Caution
Disclosure: This is based on a true story. Two friends are hiking in West Texas. One friend, Tom, has a hearing loss and usually wears his hearing aids. Today, however, Tom assumed since he was walking in nature and wouldn't be surrounded by the hustle and bustle of the city, he'd be just fine hearing his friend without them. After all, he said to himself, it’s not like I need to hear anything in nature more than my hiking buddy’s voice. Tom and his buddy, Jay, began their hike in the early afternoon, chatting along the way. Tom felt he was fine without his hearing aids, until Jay grabbed his backpack suddenly to stop him.
“Where are your hearing aids, Tom?” Jay asked.
“At home. I don’t need them out here,” Tom replied.
“Look in front of you Tom,” Jay said pointing to the rattlesnake curled ahead on the path, rattle vibrating.
“That’s the last time I leave my hearing aids at home,” Tom said, stepping back from the snake.
The moral of the story? Your hearing aids can help you enjoy nature, enjoy your friends and keep you safe.
